Vertical farming is a type of agriculture where the crops don’t need the soil to grow as they grow vertically. This is becoming more and more popular because it offers many advantages compared to regular agriculture and gardening.

What are the advantages of vertical farming?

Vertical farming offers many advantages such as:

  • Space optimization which is great in urban areas

  • Crops are protected from animals

  • Crops are protected from pests and weeds

  • It saves a lot of water

  • Due to its proximity to cities, less transportation

Does vertical farming have limitations?

One of the main challenges of vertical farming is that technology is not perfect and it still needs improvement as this type of agriculture is quite recent. At Qualiplast, we love challenges, and investing time and energy in improving vertical farming technology is something we love to do.

Another challenge is that the cost of energy is higher with this type of agricultural infrastructure than with conventional agriculture. Again, we believe that improving technology and products related to a controlled environment is part of our mission.

There are other limitations like:

  • it is not pollinated easily

  • it needs a higher-skilled workforce

  • the labor cost is more expensive than regular agriculture.

What is the impact of vertical farming on the environment?

The environmental impact of vertical farming is great because:

  • Pesticide and weed killer usage is lowered significantly or totally

  • Water is saved as it uses 10X less water than regular agriculture

  • Gasoline and fuel used for agriculture machinery and for transportation are lowered significantly or totally

While vertical farming isn’t perfect, it’s a great way to harvest crops as it yields 100X more than traditional agriculture. We want to be part of this revolution by improving the products and technology related to it! We also offer other products for other industries.
